Gabriel Panizza

Gabriel Panizza's competitive roots trace back to the West Zone of São Paulo, where local events shaped the foundational habits that would later carry him onto the U.S. international circuit. Competing through the São Paulo regional scene built the discipline and adaptability that define his approach, and in time, he channeled those qualities into a structured campaign under RMNU (Robson Moura Nations United).

The defining early turning point came in 2019, when Panizza competed at the IBJJF World Championship as a purple belt — his first exposure to elite competition on a major international stage. That experience, combined with a training stint in the United States during the same period, fundamentally reoriented his understanding of what competing at the highest level demands. In an interview with Gracie Magazine, he reflected on that moment: "The 2019 World Championship was an experience that really changed the way I viewed the highest level of competition. I realized it wasn't just about training harder. There was a lot of attention to nutrition, recovery, breathing, physical preparation, specific training, strategy and mindset. It opened my eyes."

Panizza's upward trajectory was interrupted by a knee injury that forced a significant pause in his career. His return to competition was gradual — and it arrived alongside a meaningful transformation in how he approached the sport.

Rather than simply resuming where he had left off, the comeback period became a phase of reinvention. Panizza shifted his emphasis toward control, efficiency, and energy management — moving away from sheer effort and toward precision and sharper in-match decision-making. Central to this evolution was a partnership with Robson Moura, the five-time world champion known as "Robinho," whose influence reshaped Panizza's technical foundation. Panizza described the impact of that collaboration to Gracie Magazine: "Training with Robson Moura made me pursue a more technical and strategic style of Jiu-Jitsu, using less energy and making better decisions during the match. Today, I feel that I'm consolidating movements and positions that I've been developing since my colored-belt days."

The partnership with Moura did not represent a break from Panizza's past but rather a refinement of it — a layering of strategic intelligence over the groundwork built through years of colored-belt competition.

In 2025, Robson Moura promoted Gabriel Panizza to black belt, marking the formal beginning of a new chapter in his competitive career. The transition carried immediate weight: Panizza's black belt debut produced a title at the IBJJF Tampa International Open, a result he described as deeply significant. He told Gracie Magazine: "Winning my first tournament as a black belt was very special. Your debut is something you always remember, especially when you win the title right away in your first competition here in Tampa."

The momentum carried forward with a victory at Fight to Win, where Panizza navigated a different ruleset against opponents with established international circuit experience. Rather than treating these early results as confirmation of arrival, he framed them as indicators of direction and potential. As he explained to Gracie Magazine: "These results don't make me think, 'I've made it.' Quite the opposite. They gave me confidence to understand that I can compete at this level, face strong athletes and continue building my place among the top names in the division."

Throughout this phase, Panizza has competed under RMNU (Robson Moura Nations United), the organization built around his mentor's legacy and competitive philosophy.

Panizza's 2026 season demonstrated growing consistency at the black belt level. A bronze medal at the IBJJF American National stood as one of the headline results of the year, complemented by additional podium finishes at IBJJF Opens across the United States. His recurring presence at major IBJJF events — including the Pan-American Championship, the American National, the World Master, and multiple U.S. Opens — reflects a structured, deliberate approach to accumulating ranking points and competitive experience in parallel.

As of the September 2026 IBJJF ranking update, Panizza ranked 63rd among 319 athletes in the Master 1 black belt middle-heavyweight division — a position earned within one of the sport's most densely populated and competitive brackets. He acknowledged the standard of the division to Gracie Magazine: "The level in Master 1 today is very high, and that makes the challenge even more motivating."

Looking ahead from late 2026, Gabriel Panizza has outlined a clear set of priorities. Capturing the IBJJF World Master title stands as his primary competitive objective — the most prestigious target within his division and format. Alongside that pursuit, he has identified expanding his No-Gi participation as a strategic direction, broadening his competitive profile beyond the Gi circuit where he has built his results.

His commitment to U.S.-based competition remains firm, with the American international circuit serving as the primary theater for his career at this stage. The philosophy driving those goals reflects the same shift toward intentionality that defined his post-injury comeback. In an interview with Gracie Magazine, he stated: "My main goal now is to establish myself more and more among the top athletes in my division. I want to keep showing up to training, consolidate my game and, most importantly, be able to reproduce in competition what we build every day at the academy." He added: "Today, the goal isn't simply to participate. I want to keep evolving until I'm able to compete for the biggest titles in the division."

The throughline connecting Panizza's origins in São Paulo's West Zone to his ambitions on the U.S. international circuit is a steady accumulation — of technique, of experience, and of competitive clarity earned through both setbacks and results.
