David Lang carries a documented history of fabricating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu credentials stretching back to circa 2010 or earlier, when he was first publicly exposed online — establishing a pattern of disputed claims spanning more than 15 years. Among his earliest fabrications, Lang falsely claimed that Walid Ismail had awarded him a BJJ black belt and that he had coached at Lotus Club in Brazil. Both claims were refuted on record: Walid Ismail and Lotus Club coach Giva Santana publicly denied these assertions in a video, providing direct, named rebuttals to Lang's stated lineage and affiliation.
As of October 2025, Lang's SMOOTHCOMP profile presented renewed credential claims, asserting a 4th degree BJJ black belt under José Pelé Landi-Jons and listing Tribe Martial Arts Academy as an IBJJF-registered gym. An investigation conducted in October 2025 found no record of Tribe Martial Arts Academy in the IBJJF academy registry and no IBJJF black belt certification on file under either "David Lang" or "David Bean." Efforts to verify the claimed lineage with José Pelé Landi-Jons — based in Curitiba, Brazil, where he trains at a local Gracie Barra and teaches Muay Thai — received no response.
Lang's Alabama activity was brought to wider attention by Alan Manley. Jiu-Jitsu Legacy was the first outlet to report the story, publishing its coverage on October 15, 2025, following a related piece on belt buying published on October 14, 2025.
