A Lineage Built on Pragmatism
Graugart's belt lineage mirrors the globetrotting spirit he later built his brand around. In 2003, Matt Thornton — founder of Straight Blast Gym and a prominent advocate for aliveness-based martial arts training — awarded him his blue belt. This early connection to the Straight Blast Gym lineage grounded Graugart in a pragmatic, evidence-based approach to grappling that would later inform his critiques of institutional BJJ structures.
He earned his purple belt in 2005, a period that coincided with his earliest competitive activity on the European circuit, including a superfight victory at the Battle of Copenhagen 3 that same year.
The Road to Black Belt
In 2009, Robson Barbosa awarded Graugart his brown belt, marking the beginning of a mentorship that carried through to the sport's highest rank. Three years later, in 2012, Barbosa promoted him to black belt — a milestone Graugart validated immediately on the competition floor by claiming first place at the London Open in his debut year at that rank.
Alongside his personal development as a practitioner, Graugart co-founded CSA.dk in Denmark, one of the pioneering BJJ academies in Scandinavia. The academy helped establish the sport's infrastructure in a region where it had limited presence.
