Bruno Severiano

Born around 1972 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Bruno Severiano grew up in a family of considerable means. His father, Joaquim Severiano Ribeiro, was a prominent entrepreneur whose success afforded Bruno early access to the flourishing jiu-jitsu scene taking shape across the city. Coming of age in Rio during this period meant immersion in a generation of practitioners whose lives inside and outside the sport were shaped by the tensions and turbulence that defined that era in the city's jiu-jitsu community.

Bruno Severiano holds a distinctive place in Gracie Barra history as one of the first black belts produced by the team's original gym. The training environment he was part of was extraordinary in its concentration of talent — his contemporaries included Renzo Gracie, Helio Soneca, Roberto Corrêa, Leão Teixeira, Jean Jacques Machado, and Vinicius Draculino. Forged alongside figures who would go on to shape Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on a global scale, Severiano emerged as one of Gracie Barra's most celebrated athletes, with the middleweight division becoming his primary competitive arena. His development within that original gym placed him at the very epicenter of what would become one of the most influential institutions in BJJ history.

Bruno Severiano established himself as one of the finest middleweight competitors of the 1990s and early 2000s, building a résumé that placed him firmly among the elite of his generation.

Pan Championship Excellence

His record at the Pan Championship stood as a testament to remarkable consistency — he captured gold in 1998, 1999, and 2001, adding a silver in 2000, a run that few competitors of any era could match at that tournament. On the world stage, he earned bronze medals at the IBJJF World Championship in both 1998 and 2001, while his national credentials were confirmed with gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 1997 and silver in 2001.

Victories Over Future Legends

Among his most celebrated results were victories over Saulo Ribeiro and Fernando Tererê, both of whom went on to become modern icons of the sport. His defeat of Tererê came in the final of the 2001 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship — a result that underscored just how formidable Severiano was at his competitive peak. Wins of that caliber, against opponents of that stature, stand as the clearest measure of his place among the great middleweights of his era.

Bruno Severiano's life away from competition reflected some of the broader difficulties that marked his generation of Rio de Janeiro practitioners. In 2002, he was arrested for possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol, an episode that illustrated the turbulent currents running through the lives of many in the city's jiu-jitsu community during that period. As the mid-2000s approached, Severiano stepped away from competitive jiu-jitsu to pursue business ventures — a path not unlike the entrepreneurial career his father had modeled throughout his upbringing. Through the changes and challenges of his later years, those who knew him described him as a devoted father and husband. Bruno Severiano passed away on August 15, 2019, due to a pulmonary embolism, leaving behind a legacy as one of Gracie Barra's pioneering black belts and one of the most accomplished middleweights of his competitive generation.
