Navigating On-the-Ground Challenges
Training in Dagestan presented a range of logistical challenges that Hunter navigated through careful preparation. As of his November 2025 trip, foreign bank cards were non-functional in Russia, making it essential for international visitors to carry sufficient cash for the duration of their stay. Internet connectivity proved unreliable, and occasional power outages added further complexity to day-to-day planning.
The geopolitical context of the destination required serious consideration. Most countries maintained official advisories against travel to Dagestan, and Hunter emphasized the importance of understanding these risks before committing to the journey.
Costs and Planning
Despite these constraints, Hunter found the overall costs manageable. Flights from Europe ran approximately €800, while accommodation and training through MK Wrestling were bundled at roughly €75 per night, with meals representing an additional expense beyond that package. During the trip, Hunter visited Papakha, the Makhachkala restaurant associated with UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, among other local dining establishments.
Given the coordination required to arrange training access, secure a reliable guide, manage finances without card infrastructure, and navigate travel advisories, Hunter advised anyone considering a similar trip to begin planning several months in advance.
