In late 1999, while living in Mucuri, Bahia, and still immersed in capoeira, Rios accepted a friend's invitation to attend a BJJ class. The session left him on the receiving end of submission after submission — yet rather than discouraging him, the experience ignited something. The mechanics of the art, its problem-solving quality and the sensation of being controlled despite his athletic background, proved more fascinating than humbling.

Around 2000, Rios returned to his hometown of Ipatinga, Minas Gerais, determined to continue training. The transition from capoeira — a discipline that had already sharpened his body awareness and rhythm — to the ground-based demands of Jiu-Jitsu required a willingness to be a beginner again. That quality of intellectual humility would come to define his relationship with the art for decades to follow.

Foundation Under Soneca

Rios's structured BJJ education began under Professor Everilton "Soneca," who guided him from white belt through purple belt. Soneca proved a foundational influence, instilling technical habits during the years when Rios was most impressionable as a practitioner.

The Autonomous Period

In 2003, Soneca relocated to the United States, leaving the group without formal leadership. Rather than dissolving, the training community pressed on — in Rios's own telling, they continued "among ourselves, somewhat without direction." This autonomous period forced Rios and his training partners to think critically about technique, to teach one another, and to develop a self-reliance that would later define his competitive identity.

Progression Under Phelipe Lira

The arrival of Professor Phelipe Lira — known as "Pitbull" and originally from Teresópolis — brought renewed structure to the group's development. Under Lira, Rios advanced through the upper belts and ultimately earned his black belt. He remained under Lira's instruction until 2016, a period that cemented the technical foundation he would carry into his career as an independent academy owner. His departure from Lira's school was motivated by a desire to teach and operate on his own terms.

In 2016, Rios founded his own academy in Ipatinga — the city known throughout Brazil as "Cidade do Aço" (Steel City) and as the heart of the broader Vale do Aço industrial region. The decision to open independently was both a professional leap and a statement of identity: Rios was ready to build something under his own name in a competitive regional market.

Shortly after founding his academy, he connected with Professor Diego Carioca of Team Balloutta, establishing a formal affiliation that brought his school into a broader organizational structure. The affiliation with Team Balloutta is confirmed through IBJJF records, situating Rios within a recognized competitive lineage. Over the years that followed, his academy grew into a multi-title institution in the Vale do Aço region, becoming a reference point for competitive BJJ in Minas Gerais.

Competing Without a Corner

For much of the early period of running his academy, Rios competed in a manner that set him apart from most team-supported athletes: he traveled to tournaments alone and stepped onto the mat without a corner. No one to read the scoreboard, no one to manage referee interactions between rounds, no one to counter the organized pressure of rival team camps on the sidelines. The BJJ community in the Vale do Aço region took note, and the nickname "Lobo Solitário" — Lone Wolf — followed naturally.

What began as a logistical constraint became a genuine competitive advantage. Rios runs his Ipatinga academy with a structured operational model that reflects both his competitive experience and his philosophy as an educator.
