Adam Zugec

Adam Zugec is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt based in Victoria, British Columbia, whose development as a practitioner and instructor unfolded within the lineage of Marcus Soares. In March 2008, Soares promoted Zugec directly to black belt — a milestone that placed him within one of Canada's most distinguished BJJ lineages. Soares holds the rank of 9th degree black belt and stands as the only BJJ grand master in Canada, lending considerable weight to Zugec's credential within the Canadian BJJ community. Building on the technical foundation instilled through the Soares lineage, Zugec established himself as an instructor in Victoria.

Following his black belt promotion, Adam Zugec founded Zuma Ultimate Martial Arts in Victoria, British Columbia, operating the academy alongside his wife. The gym served as the primary venue for his instructional work and represented his central role in Victoria's martial arts community. Zugec functioned as both the face of the academy and its principal instructor throughout its operation. Zuma Ultimate Martial Arts has since permanently closed — a direct consequence of the cascade of sexual misconduct allegations that emerged against Zugec.

Public Disclosure and Community Response

The circumstances surrounding Zugec's departure from the BJJ community are defined by serious and wide-ranging misconduct allegations. Multiple women came forward with accusations of inappropriate behavior spanning several years. The allegations first entered public awareness when a former student shared her experiences on the BJJ subreddit on Reddit — a disclosure that prompted additional accusers to speak out. Victoria police launched a formal investigation into the allegations following the public disclosures.

The breadth of the community response reflected the gravity of the accusations. An open letter demanding meaningful action gathered approximately 80 signatures, with accusers characterizing the alleged conduct as a sustained pattern of abuse rather than isolated incidents.

Institutional Response and Closure

The leadership team at Zuma Ultimate Martial Arts initially announced a series of remedial measures in response to the allegations, including the engagement of an independent third party to review the gym's structure and culture, the formation of an advisory council with an emphasis on women's involvement, and the implementation of formal policies governing instructor-student interactions. Accusers criticized these proposed measures as inadequate given the nature and severity of the allegations. Zuma Ultimate Martial Arts ultimately closed permanently, marking the definitive end of Zugec's operation of the academy.
