Richard Alarcon, known as "Red," entered the match as a late replacement for the injured João Miyao at Polaris 12. Alarcon had previously defeated Ash Williams in a match earlier that year that was considered both epic and slightly controversial, making this a clear opportunity for Williams to settle the score.

Despite Alarcon bringing a wrestling background into the match, it was Williams who opened the takedown offense with a well-timed double-leg. In a later takedown exchange initiated by Alarcon, Williams, the Welsh Polaris Lightweight champion, applied a quick kimura trap style setup before transitioning it into an armbar to finish the match.
